Steel frame construction drawings

Every U-Roof frame is manufactured from a project-specific drawing set. Nothing is generic, nothing is “near enough”, and nothing is left for someone to work out on site. This page explains what we produce, what we need from you to produce it, and how the drawings translate into the panels that arrive on your vehicle.

What you receive

General arrangement drawings

Plans, elevations and sections showing the building as a whole: overall dimensions, opening positions and sizes, floor levels, ridge and eaves heights, and the relationship to boundaries and existing structures. This is the drawing you check first, and the one you use for planning and Building Regulations submissions.

Panel layout drawings

Each wall broken down into its constituent pre-fabricated panels, individually numbered. The panel numbers on the drawing match the labels on the steel that arrives. Assembly becomes a matter of putting panel 4 where the drawing says panel 4 goes.

Panel detail drawings

For each panel: stud positions and centres, section sizes and gauges, noggin positions, service hole locations, opening trimmers, lintels and cripple studs. If you have told us where a wall-mounted rack, a TV, a wall bed or a golf enclosure is going, the additional structure for it appears here.

Roof drawings

Truss or rafter layout, spacings, span, pitch, bearing positions, bracing and any strapping requirements. Where the roof is designed for a specific covering a heavy slate, a green roof, solar the loading assumption is stated on the drawing. See steel frame roof systems.

Floor cassette drawings

Joist layout, spans, bearing points and any recessed zones for example a lowered section for a level-access shower tray or a golf hitting mat. The bearing points align with the foundation layout.

Foundation setting-out drawing

Positions of ground screws or pads, dimensioned from a fixed datum, so the foundation contractor installs bearings exactly where the frame needs them. See ground screw foundations.

Fixings schedule

Every connection type, the fixing specified for it, and the quantity. Our frames use 5.5 x 25mm hex head Tek screws driven with an 8mm drive bit, and these are supplied with the kit.

Installation manual

A step-by-step assembly sequence: which panel goes up first, how to brace it while the next one is positioned, how to check square before fixing, and what to check before moving on to the roof.

What we need from you

  • Footprint and internal clear dimensions — the room you want, not the frame size
  • Required internal ceiling height — critical for gyms and simulators
  • Roof form and covering — flat, mono-pitch or dual-pitch, and what is going on top
  • Opening positions and sizes — doors, windows, bi-folds, rooflights
  • Cladding intention — weight and fixing centres feed back into the frame
  • Boundary distances and any height restriction
  • Site levels and access — photographs are extremely helpful
  • Intended use — it determines imposed floor loading
  • Any heavy fixings — racks, wall beds, TVs, enclosure frames, hoists

You do not need a full architectural package. A dimensioned sketch and a few photographs is enough to start.

How the design is engineered

Section sizes and gauges are selected against the loads for your specific building: dead load of the structure and finishes; imposed floor load for the use; snow load for your location and roof pitch; and wind load, including uplift, for your wind zone and exposure. Wind uplift matters more than people expect on a light building it is why the connection between frame and foundation is designed in tension as well as compression.

From drawing to steel

Once you sign off the drawings, the geometry drives the roll-forming line directly. Each section is formed to length, punched for services and fixings, and labelled with its panel reference. Because the machine works from the same data as the drawing, what arrives matches what you approved.

This is also why changes after sign-off are expensive. It is worth spending an extra week getting the drawings right rather than a day trying to modify steel on site.

Using the drawings for approvals

The general arrangement drawings support a planning application or a Lawful Development Certificate. For a Building Regulations submission your building control body will typically also want the structural calculations, the thermal build-up and U-value calculations, and the drainage and electrical design — the parts that sit outside the frame package. Keep the drawings

Store the full set somewhere you will find it in ten years. When you want to hang something heavy, cut an opening for a new window, or answer a surveyor’s question during a sale, the panel details tell you exactly where the structure is and what it can take.
